unfortunately these photos do not
capture the subtle colors and patterns
of the impression jasper rectangles nor
the detail in the antique tibetan
turquoise and brass inlay spheres -- all
different and all handmade. the focal
point of this piece is the ammonite
pendant, a truly beautiful fossil. named
for ammon, the egyptian god of
procreation and life, ammonites are
ancient marine mollusks similar to the
modern squid, octopus, and nautiloids.
they were creatures of the open
tropical seas and are abundant in
limestones from tropical reefs.
the ammonite's characteristic spiral was
formed by partitions or chambers of the
coiled shell where the ammonite lived.
once the ammonite grew too large for its
living chamber, it formed a new one and
moved into it. the empty chambers filled
with gas to assist buoyancy
at different depths in the oceans.
ammonites have been collected
and prized for their geometrical beauty
for many thousands of years.
after a 330 million year survival on earth,
they became extinct at the end
of the cretaceous period
about 65 million years ago. that's right --
this fossil is some 65 million years old!
the quarter and the
penny are shown to
indicate the size of
the individual elements
in this necklace. this
ammonite is about the
size of the quarter.
on either side of the
ammonite, please note
the beautiful pyrite
rectangles. you may
know pyrite by
another name -- fool's
gold.
more close ups
reveal the wealth of
details in this piece.
note the tiny
luminescent
japanese art glass
cubes that
punctuate the
other elements.
