one last look -- note the labradorescence in the teardrops.
the name lapis lazuli
comes from the latin word
"lapis" meaning stone
and "azul" meaning blue.
a royal blue opaque semi-precious
stone with white veins or patches
of calcite and a few gold-looking
metallic flecks of pyrite, lapis has
been known since ancient times.
the romans believed it was
a powerful aphrodisiac,
and in the middle ages it was
thought to keep the limbs
healthy and to free the soul
from fear.
Counter
labradorite can produce a colorful
play of light called labradorescence.
as the individual teardrops in this
necklace catch the light, their glow
changes with each movement.
labradorite is grayish blue in color
but displays bright flashes of green,
blue, and sometimes yellow-gold
colors when viewed from different
angles. originally found in labrador,
canada -- hence the name -- there
are also labradorite deposits
in madagascar, mexico, russia,
and the united states.
