hessonite (or cinnamon stone)
is a variety of garnet and has a
characteristic red color, at times
inclining to orange. it comes
chiefly from sri lanka, brazil,
and california. the name
"garnet" comes from the latin
granatus ("grain"), possibly a
reference to the
punica
granatum
("pomegranate"), a
plant with red seeds similar in
shape, size, and color to some
garnet crystals.
the name "topaz" is derived
from the greek
topazos --
meaning "to seek" -- which
was the name of an island
in the red sea which was
difficult to find and from
which a yellow stone was
mined in ancient times.
